Synthesis Architects selected to redesign Times Union Center in Albany

Synthesis Architects in Schenectady is the preferred designer for an upcoming, $13.1 million renovation of the Times Union Center in downtown Albany, New York — a major upgrade as the arena approaches its 25th anniversary and wants to bring back the NCAA Division I men’s basketball and hockey tournaments.

Bob Belber, regional general manager for SMG, the private company that runs the arena on behalf of Albany County, wrote to county officials letting them know the Synthesis renovation proposal is preferred over one submitted by the lone competing firm, CSArch in Albany.

“Our feeling is that Synthesis Architect’s concepts, including a full enclosure of the atrium as well as enclosing the northeast corner of the concourse leading to the parking garage is the best proposal, of the two received,” Belber wrote in an October 5 letter. “Synthesis’s plan will be more useful year-round and it will provide the ‘facelift’ that is needed.”
