Apheresis Dialysis Infusion and Treatment Center – Albany Medical Center
Albany, New York
Charged with co-locating Albany Medical Center’s Dialysis, Apheresis and Infusion treatment facilities, Synthesis Architects applied evidence-based design to improve patient outcomes and enhance nursing efficiencies.
The 50 treatment bays in the 30,000 sf facility were arranged to provide access to daylight, views of nature and positive distraction for the patients while the nursing staff, equipped with WOW’s (Workstations on Wheels), were also afforded distributed touchdown work areas where they could maintain direct visual contact with the patients. Detailed planning and mock-ups allowed intensely equipped headwalls to be available for every patient within an open plan environment. Treatment stations include dedicated pediatric areas, open patient bays with significant natural lighting, private rooms, and (4) airborne infectious isolation rooms. Privacy curtains, while provided, are usually left open to allow daylight, views and direct nurse-patient contact.
Synthesis Architects refined the Program of Spaces, developed the Architectural Narrative and assisted in the Certificate Of Need review process with the New York State Department of Health. Synthesis assured compliance with the extensive National and State regulatory requirements and facility guidelines for Hospitals and Ambulatory Care Facilities.
